The Rio Azul farmer cooperative is made up of 272 members, all from the Mayan group Jacaltec—also known as the Popti people. About 20% of the farm owners are women, and every member lives within walking distance (literally—about 1.5 hours or less) of the wet mill where they bring their cherries for processing.
The farms average about two acres, but the flavor coming out of this small-scale setup is anything but small. We’ve been working with Rio Azul since 2006, and year after year, it’s one of the standouts from the famed Huehuetenango growing region.
The co-op takes its name from the turquoise river that winds through the community—fitting, for a coffee this bright and full of life.
Tasting notes: caramel, apple, cinnamon, and a distinctive citrus note on the finish. Think apple galette with caramel drizzle and a touch of orange zest—warm, sweet, and just sharp enough to keep things interesting.
